Ship's Coffee Shop Sign

Ship%27s+Coffee+Shop+Sign

10/20/1999 - Olympic Boulevard at La Cienega, Los Angeles, California.

The last remaining Ship's Coffee Shop in Los Angeles was torn down in 19951, the year before I arrived in Los Angeles. If it was anything like the photos I've seen of Ship's Westwood, which was also torn down about 10 years earlier, L.A. is a much emptier place for the loss.

A gas station occupies the former site of the restaurant.

Norm's Sign

Norm%27s+Sign

10/02/1999 - 470 North La Cienega Blvd, West Hollywood. Armet & Davis, Architects.

Several Norm's still exist around the Los Angeles area, with relatively unchanged exteriors. Foodwise, Norm's is greasy spoon all the way - which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I'll take Norm's over Denny's any day.

Johnie's: Side Sign Detail

10/02/1999 - Fairfax at Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles. Armet & Davis, Architects.

A stylish Coffee Shop sign decorates Armet & Davis' characteristically slanting roof along Fairfax ave. A potential point of interest to film buffs: A scene from the Coen Brothers' film The Big Lebowski was filmed inside Johnie's.

Johnie's: Across Wilshire & Fairfax

Johnie%27s%3A+Across+Wilshire+%26+Fairfax

10/02/1999 - Fairfax at Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles. Armet & Davis, Architects.

Johnie's fate is uncertain at the time of this writing. Another web page says that the property is now owned by the 99-Cent store company, who happen to have a store immediately to the north on Fairfax. I at at Johnie's once with Josh before it closed, back in the summer of 1999... the interior decor had seen much better days and the food wasn't that good. Nevertheless I have a fondness for the place, and I really hope somebody is able to save it before it gets turned into a parking lot.

Johnie's Coffee Shop Restaurant

10/02/1999 - I was sad to hear that Johnie's closed its doors earlier this year. Originally called "Romeo's Times Square", Johnie's is located at the intersection of Wilshire and Fairfax in Los Angeles.
