Come In

There's a very vocal thrush in the woods tonight. I was tempted to go sit on the porch in the gloaming and listen, but when I muted the Red Sox-Yankees game, the thrush stopped singing. Maybe it knew that Tice and Zinny are nestled companionably on either side of me, and didn't want us to get up.

I am put in mind of Robert Frost's Come In.

The wood thrush has one of the nicest calls that can be heard in New England.

I miss them.

Here in New Mexico, we don't have pigeons... instead, we have doves. For the most part, they have the nice mourning-dove style, owl-like "whooo". But they also make this dying-crow-like "AAARrrrrrrrnnngh" sound which is entirely unappealing.

They do have a nice wing-whirr.

But, damn, there are SO MANY of them!

...Aside from that, we have the occasional Raven (which, oddly, I find I dislike compared to Crows--one of my favourite NE birds), and a bunch of house finches and chickadees. Oh, and robins pass through, but at different times of the year. ...The robin does have a nice enough repetoire.

But it was always the hauting thrush 's song that I would savor in the forests of the NE.
